Faced with the prospect of Somebody That I Used To Know, by Gotye feat. Kimbra, overhauling her own 2008 single I Kissed A Girl as the debut hit with most weeks at number one in the last five years, Katy Perry takes matters into her own hands by toppling it herself, and securing her third career number one with Part Of Me. Debuting at number one (79,079 sales), Part Of Me is the first single from Teenage Dream - The Complete Confection, the new, special edition of her album Teenage Dream which, in its original state, spawned six Top 20 hits. Perry has sold nearly 6m singles in the UK to date, with six singles topping the 500,000 mark, most recently the title track of Teenage Dream, which reached the target a little over a week ago. Her two previous number ones, I Kissed A Girl and California Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg) have sold 654,560 and 741,001 copies respectively but her all-time biggest hit, despite peaking at number three, is Firework, which has sold 833,625 copies.
All three of Perry's number ones, incidentally, were co-written by the singer, and all three also included input from Max Martin and Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald). Martin is the most successful of the three as a songwriter, writing nearly 50 Top 40 UK hits including 10 number ones since he got his break penning We’ve Got It Goin’ On, a number three hit for The Backstreet Boys in 1996. Swede Martin last number one before Part Of Me - which was also co-written by Gottwald - was Jessie J's Domino which topped the chart just 10 weeks ago. His other number ones: I Want It That Way (Backstreet Boys, 1999), …Baby One More Time and Oops!...I Did It Again (Britney Spears, 1999 and 2000), So What! (Pink, 2008), My Life Would Suck Without You (Kelly Clarkson, 2009) and Dynamite (Taio Cruz, 2010).
With five weeks at number one apiece, I Kissed A Girl and Somebody That I Used To Know now share the title for the most successful debut hit since...well, it depends on your interpretation. Gnarls Barkley's first hit Crazy topped the chart for nine weeks in 2006 but the duo's Cee Lo Green had previously been credited on Sugar (Gimme Some), a Trick Daddy single which reached number 61 the previous year. The last number one by an all-new act to spend longer at number one than I Kissed A Girl and Somebody That I Used To Know was The Spice Girls' debut hit Wannabe, which topped for seven weeks in 1996.
Falling 1-3 this week, Somebody That I Used To Know nevertheless completes an eighth successive week of sales over 50,000, attracting a further 60,620 punters, and raising its cumulative sales to 697,105.
It is one of only two songs from last week's top six to remain there in the latest list, with Sean Paul's She Doesn't Mind, Labrinth's Last Time and JLS' Proud joining Katy Perry in top six debuts, while Nicki Minaj's Starships ebbs 2-5 (50,058 sales).
Attracting a lot of airplay from Radio One, She Doesn't Mind (number two, 66,980 sales) is Sean Paul's 17th chart single since 2002, and his third to reach number two. His only chart-topper: Breathe, credited to Blu Cantrell feat. Sean Paul, which reached number one in 2003, and is also his biggest seller (381,894 sales).
The biggest selling single on Syco - Sony's vanity label for Simon Cowell - in the last 12 months is not One Direction's debut single What Makes You Beautiful or Little Mix's Cannonball, or any other act associated with his blockbuster TV shows The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent - it is singer/songwriter/rapper Labrinth's Earthquake which reached number two last October, and has since gone on to sell 690,188 copies. Also featuring Tinie Tempah, it was the second single from Labrinth's upcoming debut album, Electronic Earth, following Let The Sun Shine, which got to number three and sold 311,529 copies. Last Time is the third single from the album, and debuts this week at number four (50,229 sales).
After the comparative failure of Do You Feel What I Feel - which peaked at number 16 to break their string of eight straight Top 10 hits going back to their debut - Proud restores pride for JLS, debuting at number six (44,777 sales). Not on any JLS album, it is a new recording benefitting Sport Relief. Sport Relief is a biennial event which started in 2002, and the very first Sport Relief song, Elton John and Alessandro Safia’s Your Song reached number four. Subsequently, Some Girls by Rachel Stevens reached number two in 2004, Don’t Stop Me Now topped the chart for McFly (2006), Leona Lewis reached number two with Better in Time/Footprints In The Sand (2008) and Robbie Williams got to number 45 with 2010 offering Morning Sun.
Alexandra Burke's Elephant (feat. Erick Morillo) dives from its number three debut position to number 12 (21,618 sales).
Surrey band You Me At Six were number 19 on Thursday's midweek sales flashes, and looked to be set for their first Top 20 hit - but The Swarm eventually settled at number 23 (12,650 sales). As a result, 2011 single Rescue Me (feat. Chiddy) reamins their biggest hit, thanks to its number 21 peak.
Physical release can't secure a Top 75 return for Madonna's Give Me All Your Luvin' collaboration with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. The track, which debuted and peaked at number 37 last month, sold 1,460 copies on CD last week, to enter the CD chart at number two (JLS' Proud is number one with 6,051 sales) but the addition of just 835 digital sales place it a modest 104th overall.
Overall singles sales are up 0.71% week-on-week at 3,103,342 - 4.03% above same week 2011 sales of 2,983,236.

When it comes to topping the chart, timing is everything. Paul Weller wasn't able to get it right in 2010, when his Wake Up The Nation album debuted at number two, on sales of 52,563, beaten to the punch by AC/DC's unexpectedly big first week for compilation/soundtrack Iron Man 2 - but Weller got it right this week, and tops the chart with follow-up Sonik Kicks taking pole position despite a substantially lower first week sale of 30,269.
It is 53 year old Weller's fourth solo number one album, following Stanley Road (1995, on first week sales of 62,603), Illumination (2002, 54,283) and 22 Dreams (2008, 58,924). It comes 30 years to the week after his first number one album, The Gift, as a member of The Jam. Despite their popularity, it was their only number one album, though he returned to the summit as leader of The Style Council with Our Favourite Shop (1985) before pursuing a solo career.
With singles Titanium (feat. Sia) and Turn Me On (feat. Nicki Minaj) remaining in the Top 10, French DJ David Guetta's Nothing But The Beat album dashes 9-2 to equal the position in which it debuted/peaked last September. Helped by the fact that the 2CD version of the set and its digital equivalent are widely available for £5.99, the album sold 30,113 copies last week - just 156 fewer than Paul Weller's Sonik Kicks - to raise its career sales to 393,485. Guetta's 2009 album, One Love, remains his biggest seller, with sales to date of 495,264 copies. Titanium falls 6-7 this week, even though its sales are up 10.62% week-on-week at 37,795, while Turn Me On falls 8-10 (26,438 sales).
Last week's number one album, In My Dreams, suffers a 59.0% dip in sales to 24,200 and falls to number three for Military Wives, as the Mother's Day effect works its way out of the figures. Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events and Adele's 21 sales are slashed by more than half for the same reason, as they dip 2-4 (24,184 sales) and 3-5 (22,820 sales). Last week's highest debut, Home Again by Michael Kiwanuka, suffers even more significant fall-off and slides 4-10 (10,863 sales). Marcus Collins' Top 10 tenure is brief, as his self-titled debut album retreats to number 18 (6,415 sales) a week after debuting at number seven.
Five years after their third album, Wincing The Night Away, gave them their UK chart debut, reaching number 16, New Mexican rock band The Shins debut at number 11 (10,254 sales) with follow-up, Port Of Morrow. And Swedish band Miike Pop's second album, Happy To You, debuts at number 31 (4,780 sales), three years after their eponymous debut reached number 59.
Set to make a big leap next week, when sales of the newly released Teenage Dream - The Complete Confection edition will be vigorous, Katy Perry's second album, Teenage Dream, moves 41-34 (4,150 sales). In the Top 75 continuously since it debuted at number one in September 2010, it has so far amassed 82 weeks on the chart, selling 983,991 copies. Perry's 2008 debut album One Of The Boys never went higher than number 11, spent 49 weeks on the chart, and has sold 661,397 copies.
Now That's What I Call Running suffers a 26.22% dip in sales week-on-week to 18,333 but returns to the top of the compilation chart.
Overall album sales are down 23.98% week-on-week to 1,496,743 - their lowest level for 31 weeks , and 19.21% below same week 2011 sales of 1,852,673.
