Singles

Matching the peak of her home country Canada, plus New Zealand and Ireland, Carly Rae Jepsen jumps to No.1 on the Australian charts in her fifth week within the Top 100 with her debut single here "Call Me Maybe", becoming the 990th No.1 in Australia (1940 to 2012) and the 424th ARIA No.1 Single (1983 to 2012).

Carly becomes the second Canadian this century to top the singles chart (we’ve had several over on the albums chart) as Avril Lavigne scored two during the last decade with “Complicated” (Aug 2002) and “Girlfriend” (April 2007). The last seven No.1’s by Canadian acts have all been by their female performers, Jann Arden, Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Avril Lavigne, and “Call Me Maybe” is the 19th Canadian performed No.1 in Oz. Here in Australia we’ve had three songs with ‘Called’ in their titles, but never a single ‘Call’ has made it to the top, plus only one other ‘Maybe’, which was by Kate DeAraugo with “Maybe Tonight” (Dec 2005). Plus it’s also the 30th No.1 for the Interscope label here in Australia.

Last week's No.1 "We Are Young" for fun. featuring Janelle Monae swaps places with Carly by dropping two places to No.3, and in-between these swaps, Nicki Minaj holds at No.2 for a third straight week with "Starships".

First time Top 10 entrants Labrinth and Tinie Tempah jumps up seven places to No.4 with "Earthquake" plus score a platinum certification in the process and they push last weeks No.4, "Bangarang" for Skrillex down to No.6. Former No.1 "Ass Back Home" for the Gym Class Heroes and Neon Hitch is down one place to No.7, whilst six week No.1 holder "Wild Ones" for Flo Rida and Sia drops down three places to No.8. Holding at No.9 is Jason DeRulo's "Fight for You", and down three places to No.10 are Qwote and Pitbull with "Throw Your Hands Up".

Justin Bieber scores the highest new entry of the week with his new single "Boyfriend", which debuts at No.5 this week. It's his first new material to enter the charts since his Christmas songs back in November 2011, "Mistleotoe" (HP-20). It's also the first single to be taken from his forthcoming third album "Believe" which is due in July (tentatively). Plus “Boyfriend” instantly becomes only his second Top 10 hit here, after his debut single “Baby” made it all the way to No.3 in May of 2010.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Ed Sheeran's "Lego House" jumps up five places to No.14, and up four places to a new peak of No.25 is Outasight with "Tonight is the Night". Lil' Wayne's "Mirror" is up a place to No.26, and also up one spot is Usher's "Climax" to a new height of No.29 this week.
Last weeks highest new entry for T-Pain and Ne-Yo, "Turn All the Lights On" jumps up twelve places to No.31, and Stan Walker's "Music Won't Break Your Heart" is up eighteen places to No.35. Also joining the top 50 for the first time is DJ Fresh and Rita Ora with "Hot Right Now", up eights spots to No.46.

Australia's Got Talent performer Timomatic debuts at No.16 with his second chart entry "If Looks Could Kill". His previous single "Set it off" went all the way to No.2 in January, and is sitting at No.22 this week. And also debuting within the top 20 this week is the fourth single from Florence + the Machine's second album "Ceremonials" (TW-15 up from 33). Entitled "Never Let Me Go" it debuts at No.19 and becomes the albums highest charting single so far, and their second Top 20 entry after “You’ve Got the Love” made it to No.9 in April 2010, plus they also re-enter at No.99 with "Shake it Out" (HP-36).

Lower 50: These Kids Wear Crowns re-enter at No.51 with their version of Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" helped by it being used as the TV commercial theme for the new series of ‘Dancing With the Stars’, and leaping up thirty-eight places to No.52 is the remix of "Wild Ones" entitled "Wild One Two" from Jack Back and David Guetta. The mid-season finale for Graham Norton's show last Saturday night had David Guetta performing "Titanium", which helps it to rebound twenty-one places to No.54 and ahead of his upcoming tour here.
Emile Sande's "Next to Me" jumps up sixteen places to score a new peak of No.62, and re-entering at No.65 are The Wanted with "Glad You Came", whilst the third re-entry of the week comes at No.97, Birdy with "Skinny Love".

Bob Sinclar was last on our charts back in August of 2007 with “Sound of Freedom (Everybody’s Free)” (HP-22), and this week he enters at No.60 with his sixth entry here; "Rock the Boat" featuring the ensemble of Pitbull, Dragonfly and Fatman Scoop.

The Glee mid-season finale aired last Friday night (23rd of March) with the gang winning the sectionals, and three songs from them enter the charts this week. This week's No.38 song for Kelly Clarkson, "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)" debuts for the gang at No.68, followed at No.87 with their mash-up of "Fly" / "I Believe I Can Fly", and lastly at No.91 is their new original song "Here's to us".

Ricki-Lee enters at No.69 with "Do it Like That", the follow-up to her November 2011 No.19 single "Raining Diamonds". B.o.B enters at No.71 with "So Good", and Rebecca Ferguson makes her first singles chart entry at No.73 with "Nothing's Real But Love" helped by her recent promo tour.

Aussie hip-hop act 360 debuts at No.77 with his new single entitled "Child", and current tourists Evanescence debut at No.86 with "What You Want". Local singer Natasha Duarte scores her first chart entry at No.92 with "Wanted to Feel", and Madonna enters at No.93 with "Girl Gone Wild".

Albums

Madonna's twelfth studio album debuts at No.1 this week, "MDNA", and it's her first on a new label, Interscope (she had been with Warner since 1982). It's becomes her tenth No.1 album (and seventh studio No.1) in Australia also, making her the outright third place holder on the list of 'Most No.1 Albums in Australia 1965 to 2012'. The top five on that list are The Beatles (14), U2 (11), Madonna (10), Jimmy Barnes (9) and tied with eight each are John Farnham and Bon Jovi.

“MDNA” is the 642nd No.1 album in Australia (1965 to 2012) and the 501st for ARIA (1983 to 2012) and brings Madonna’s tally of accumulated weeks at No.1 to eighteen placing her 25th on the list of ‘Total Accumulated Weeks at No.1 1965 to 2012’. Plus “MDNA” becomes the 235th No.1 by an American Performer, and the 91st by a Female Performer.
One Direction hold at No.2 for a third non-consecutive week with their debut album "Up All Night", and dropping two places to No.3 is the previous two weeks No.1 holder "Drinking from the Sun" for The Hilltop Hoods. Adele drops a single place to No.4 with her 31-week-running No.1 album "21", and holding at No.5 is Skrillex with his "Bangarang" EP.

Bob Seger scores another new peak this week of No.6 with his new GH set "Ultimate Hits", and holding at No.7 for a third week is former No.1 "Born to Die" for Lana Del Rey. Ed Sheeran's "+" re-peaks at No.8 (it first hit here in late Nov. 2011), up four places this week, and down three spots to No.9 is Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball". And holding for another inside the Top 10 is Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops and Hooligans", down one place to No.10.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Florence + The Machine's "Ceremonials" jumps up eighteen places to No.15, and halving itself from last week, up seventeen places to No.17 is David Guetta's "Nothing But the Beat" (ahead of his late April tour). Touring acts help their album up the charts this week, firstly Evanescence's current self-titled album jumps up seventeen places to No.25, whilst Tim McGraw's "Emotional Traffic" is up four places to No.16, and his wife and touring partner Faith Hill sees her compilation album "The Hits" jump up thirty-two places to No.35. Rebecca Ferguson's "Heaven" album jumps a massive forty-two places from last weeks debut of No.82 to land at No.40 this week thanks to her promo tour, and ahead of his concerts this week, Tony Bennett’s “Duets 1 & 2” double set climbs into the Top 50 at No.48.

John Fogerty is touring Australia at the moment, and a fifth to chart in Australia Creedence Clearwater Revival compilation debuts at No.14 this week entitled "The Ultimate Collection". Last week their former No.22 compilation "Chronicle" re-entered at No.41 and drops down a place to No.42, whilst John's own set "Long Road Home: The Ultimate" re-enters at No.100.

American progressive rock band The Mars Volta debut at No.18 with their sixth album "Noctourniquet". All six albums have managed to make it into the Top 50, three of those reaching the Top 10. One place lower at No.19 is the re-packed edition of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" album now entitled "Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection", which features her current single "Part of Me" (TW-12) plus two new tracks.

Los Angeles hip-hop collective known simply as Odd Future (full name is Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) debut at No.34 with their fourth release "The Of Tape Volume 2", their first to chart here. A few places lower at No.36 is Lionel Richie's new album "Tuskegee", which is his tenth studio album, and features thirteen of his familiar tunes re-recorded with modern Country singers, and is named after his home town in Alabama.

Swedish metal band Meshuggah score their first Top 50 entry with their seventh album entitled "Koloss", becoming their first ever album to chart here in Australia. And making his first appearance on our charts is the son of Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, who enters at No.51 with his fifth album "Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now".

Lower 50: Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" has been climbing over the past couple of weeks, and this week it’s up to No.55, but with the new repackaged edition out this week, expect it to fly up next week. And Florence + the Machine's first album "Between Two Lungs" also climbs back up, jumping eighteen places to No.59 this week. Ball Park Music's "Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs" re-enters at No.64, whilst M83 is back in at No.83 with "Hurry Up, We're Dancing", Laine Lane rejoins the Top 100 at No.86 with "To the Horses" and INXS see their compilation "The Very Best" come back in at No.98.

The fourth album for The All-American Rejects debuts at No.65 entitled "Kids in the Street". Paul Weller scored his fourth UK No.1 album this past week with "Sonik Kicks", which enters the ARIA Albums Chart at No.72 to be his eleventh solo album and sixth to chart here. The Eli Young Band debuts at No.75 with "Life at Best". Shinedown's fourth album "Amaryllis" debuts at No.78 and is their first to chart here and British modern-psychedelic quartet Django Django enter at No.82 with their self-titled debut album. Three further new entries occur at No.87, "Thinking in Textures" for Chet Faker, "En Vivo!" the new live album for Iron Maiden is in at No.91, and Kina Garris debuts at No.94 with "Stairwells".
